Hydroscand awards scholarship to student from Appelsbosch, South Africa

Hydroscand has been involved in funding a school project in South Africa since 2011 and for several years has also awarded academic scholarships to the student with the best results. This year, the scholarship went to Aphiwe Mathonsi.

Earlier this year, Hydroscand also started the 'Inqolayolwazi School Project Fund' and donated a large amount to the fund in celebration of Hydroscand's 50th anniversary. The fund will pay for further studies for ambitious students and provide for individual needs and practicalities needed during their studies.

October 2019 was graduation time at Inqolayolwazi School, it was also the time to award Hydroscand's scholarship to the student who achieved the best result amongst all the graduates.

“We use a computer system that automatically calculates the grades for all students from semester one to three and shows which student has received the highest marks in all subjects. This is how we identify the student who will receive the scholarship,” says Christabel Ngcobo, principal at Inqolayolwazi School.

The 2019 scholarship went to Aphiwe Mathonsi, who is dreaming of one day becoming a scientist or a doctor. “A well-deserved scholarship, as the competition was stiff with 136 graduating students”, says Edna Freese, who has been involved in the school project on-site in South Africa since its inception.

“Our new student, Aphiwe Mathonsi, will study at a school in Pietermaritzburg in 2020. Carter High School is a former Model C school and they are sticklers for rules and guarantees for financial issues. They even have a legal advisor who we had to satisfy that enough money was available to send her to this school! I have great hopes that Aphiwe will be enrolled at Carter High, her academic results are excellent,” says Edna.

This year, the scholarship was awarded by Louis Freese, Edna's husband, who was also involved in Hydroscand school project since inception. He was also honoured to name the scholarship 2019, which is called the 'Louis Freese Scholarship'.
